BIOGRAFIA

Il gruppo nasce nel maggio del 1980 ricalcando all'inizio le orme dell'Hard Rock più classico. Nonostante vari tentativi di introdurre nell'organico altri componenti la formazione dei Way Out comincia come un power trio con Riccardo Di Felice (Keyboards/Bass Guitar), Stefano Strizzi (Drums) e Riccardo Strizzi (Guitar/Vocals). La presenza dei fratelli Strizzi e Di Felice sarà infatti l'elemento costante che caratterizzerà la formazione dei Way Out nel corso dei decenni, fino ad oggi.

Da un lato, l'attività della band è quella di un tipico gruppo underground, dall'altro emerge sin dall'inizio l'esigenza di trovare una propria identità musicale che si discosti dalle radici Hard Rock dei Seventies. Infatti gli esordi della band restano ancora legati a band quali Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin e i testi vengono scritti in italiano.

Tra l'81 e l'83 l'onda lunga dell'Heavy Metal britannico arriva anche in Italia e i Way Out abbracciano con entusiasmo i nuovi dettami stilistici (Saxon e Judas Priest in testa) della NWOBHM. Il sound dunque si indurisce ulteriormente: le tastiere, un tempo punto focale del gruppo, vengono abbandonate e i testi trascritti in inglese. Nel marzo dell'85 la band registra una manciata di brani pubblicati sullo storico demo-tape We Are Ready. La title track, Over the World, Lady of Metal e Black Hell vengono subito apprezzate sia in Italia che all'estero.

Nel Maggio dello stesso anno entra a far parte del gruppo Vincenzo Tauriello (ex Massacra) a cui viene affidata la chitarra solista. Il gruppo con la nuova formazione a due chitarre si esibisce live in varie occasioni tra cui spiccano due memorabili prestazioni: al “I° Italian Metal Day di Fossano” (CN), insieme ad altre storiche band italiane quali Wild Devils, Whitefire e Jester Beast e a un concerto al Black Out (storico locale di Roma) organizzato da Radio Rock e Metal Massacre con i maggiori gruppi della Capitale. (Raff, Fingernails, Schwartz).

Nell'86 il quartetto registra tre song — Steel Blade, The Last Promise, The Sound Of The Night — che vengono utilizzate a scopo promozionale. L’anno seguente il gruppo accusa varie defezioni dovute alle partenze per il servizio di leva. Nell'aprile dell'88 la band trova un nuovo assetto con l'ingresso di due nuovi chitarristi: Alex Massari e Dario Marcoaldi sostituiscono Vincenzo Tauriello e Riccardo Strizzi. Quest'ultimo, da questo momento, andrà a occuparsi esclusivamente e in via definitiva delle parti vocali.

Nell'89 Dario Marcoaldi lascia la band che resta con il talentuoso Alex Massari ad occuparsi di tutte le parti di chitarra. Nel maggio dello stesso anno il gruppo termina la registrazione dei brani che finiranno nel demo dal titolo The Sound Of The Night, che contiene anche le tre tracce registrate nell'86. L'attività dei Way Out prosegue con numerose esibizioni live per promuovere l'uscita del nuovo demo.

Nel dicembre del '90 Alex Massari viene sostituito dal nuovo chitarrista Stefano Scarfone, un virtuoso il quale riesce da subito a ottenere ottime recensioni grazie al suo stile moderno e shredding donando nuova linfa vitale alla band romana. Nei quattro anni seguenti le esibizioni live sono numerose e molto apprezzate dal pubblico; sono da ricordare soprattutto le gloriose serate "Metal Massacre Nights" organizzate da Giuseppe "Baffo" Zappinbulso, mitico organizzatore, DJ e da sempre vero catalizzatore, una sorta di Neal Kay, di tutta la scena metal romana.

Purtroppo nel '94 il gruppo si scioglie con l’uscita di Stefano Scarfone che come il precedente chitarrista Alex Massari va a trovar fortuna con artisti affermati di fama nazionale e internazionale. Inoltre, in quegli stessi anni, l'avvento del rock di Seattle e del Grunge mette in crisi tutta la scena Heavy Metal anche in Italia e non sono poche le band a sciogliersi proprio in quel periodo.

Arriviamo dopo uno iato di vent'anni al 2014: l'anno in cui i Way Out si riformano. Ma procediamo per gradi facendo un piccolo passo indietro. L'uscita del libro Anni di Metallo (2013) di Andrea Ciccomartino (ex Rude, cantante e chitarrista dei Graal) mette finalmente nero su bianco — attraverso un encomiabile lavoro d'archivio basato su i demo, le fanzine, le riviste e le locandine dell'epoca — la storia della scena metal romana degli anni ottanta/novanta. Il brano dei Way Out Under Russian Fire viene inserito nell'omonima compilation allegata al libro e soprattutto viene stampato un vinile pubblicato dalla ACE Records che include sei vecchi brani provenienti dai demo degli anni ottanta: Steel Blade, The Last Promise, The Sound Of The Night, Under Russian Fire, Broken Love, Kiss Me Down. I Way Out trovano così la scintilla per una rinascita, pronti a ripartire da dove avevano lasciato. Il disco viene presentato al Closer, noto locale romano, nello storico evento live “Anni di Metallo”, organizzato da Gianfranco Belisario e lo stesso Ciccomartino, insieme ai Graal e ai Raff. La formazione comprende oltre ai tre fondatori del gruppo (i due fratelli Strizzi, e Riccardo Di Felice) anche due vecchie conoscenze, i due chitarristi Vincenzo Tauriello e Alex Massari per la prima volta insieme sul palco.

Dopo alcuni concerti, di comune accordo Alex Massari torna alla sua professione di musicista e insegnante: al suo posto subentra il giovane e affermato Frank Marrelli (ex Rebel Tango), già molto noto nell'ambiente romano. L'attività riprende a pieno regime con molte esibizioni dal vivo tra cui spicca quella del 23 Aprile 2015 come gruppo spalla alla leggendaria band inglese Girlschool e l'uscita di un brano sulla compilation Metal Years Vol.I.

The band was born in Rome in May 1980, featuring the power trio Riccardo Di Felice (Keyboards/Bass), Stefano Strizzi (Drums) and Riccardo Strizzi (Vocals/Guitars), at the beginning following the steps of classic hard rock. Despite attempts to include other members in the band, the three guys will be the constant for decades to come.
Way Out was a typical underground band, but soon felt the need for a musical identity of its own, going far from the hard rock roots of the 70’s bands, such as Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and so on. At the time Way Out wrote its lyrics in Italian.
Between 1981 and 1983, the long wave of British Heavy Metal reached Italy and Way Out got involved with passion in the new stylistic dictates of the NWOBHM (Saxon and Judas Priest first of all). The sound became harder, keyboards, formerly central, disapperead and the lyrics were translated in English. In March 1985 the band recorded a few songs and released the demo “We Are Ready”. All the songs We Are Redy, Lady of Metal, and Black Hell were well appreciated in Italy and Europe.
In May 1983, Vincenzo Tauriello (ex-Massacra) joined the band as lead guitarist: with the new line-up Way Out played in some great live performances like on the occasion of the First Italian Metal Day in Fossano (CN) -where they had the chance to play with other extraordinary Italian bands like Wild Devils, White Fire, Jester Beast- and the performance at the Roman club Black Out organized by Radio Rock, together with other great bands like Raff, Fingernails, Schwartz.
In 1986 Way Out recorded three songs (Steel Blade, The Last Promise, The Sound of the Night), to promote the band.
The following year few members temporarily left the band to join the army for National Service, and in April 1988 the band came out with a new line-up with two new guitarists: Alex Massari and Dario Marcoaldi. Vincenzo Tauriello left the band and Riccardo Strizzi left the guitar to deal mainly with singing.
In 1989 Dario Marcoaldi left Way Out and in May the band achieved the recording of the demo “The Sound of the Night”, including the three tracks recorded in 1986. The Way Out continued the activity with several live shows to promote the demo release.
In December 1990 Alex Massari left the Way Out and Stefano Scarfone was called to join the band, as a virtuoso ottaining a great response and giving a new impulse to the Roman band. In the next four years, Way Out played a lot of live shows, appreciated by the audience, above all in the “Metal Massacre Nights” organized by Giuseppe “Baffo” Zappinbulso, a great gig organizer, DJ, a sort of Neal Kay of the Roman metal scene.
Unluckily in 1994 Way Out broke up when Stefano Scarfone left the band to work with accomplished artists of national and international fame, like Alex Massari did before. Moreover, in those years, the coming of Seattle rock and Grunge movement brought crisis in the whole Heavy Metal scene and in Italy lots of bands broke up.
After a twenty-year jump, in 2014: Way Out came back together. The release of the book “Anni Di Metallo” (2013) by Andrea Ciccomartino (ex-Rude, now singer and guitarist in Graal), was an incredible work about Roman rock and metal underground scene of the 80’s and 90’s (demo tapes, fanzines, local gig posters), including a CD with a compilation of the bands of those glorious years, and featuring Way Out’s song Under Russian Fire.
At the same time a long playing is released by ACE Records including six old songs from 80’s Way Out demo-tapes : Steel Blade, The Last Promise, The Sound of the Night, Under Russian Fire, Broken Love, Kiss me Down.
Way Out have finally found out a new fire, ready to start again: the release party of their album took place in Rome at Closer Live Club, on the occasion of the Anni Di Metallo, organized by Gianfranco Belisario and Ciccomartino,where the band played with Graal and Raff.
The line-up now is formed by the three former members (the Strizzi brothers and Di Felice) and two old friends, the guitarists Vincenzo Tauriello and Alex Massari, for the first time together on stage.
After few live performances, Alex Massari came back to his job of musician and teacher: he was replaced by the young and talented Frank Marrelli (ex-Rebel Tango), a well known guitarist in the Roman scene. They started again at full speed with lots of live, like the show on the 23rd April 2015 supporting Girlschool, the legendary English band , and the release of one song on the compilation “Metal Years Vol. I”.
